My Baby Has A Black Eye!

Blue got punched in school today. The school nurse informed me about it early this morning. (Receiving calls like that literally makes my flesh crawl.) This afternoon, I talked to his teacher about the incident.

TEACHER'S VERSION: Blue pushed another kid, that's why the kid punched him. She talked to both boys already, and they shook hands and made up.

BLUE'S VERSION #1: He accidentally pushed the kid that's why the kid punched him. He walked away to tell teacher about it. However, another kid accidentally stepped on the first kid's shoelaces, making him trip. The kid thought it was Blue again, so he scratched Blue.

BLUE'S VERSION #2: He accidentally pushed the kid that's why the kid punched him. He walked away to tell teacher about it. However, he slipped and accidentally kicked the other kid. That's why the kid attacked him a second time.
No witnesses...2 six-year olds...Will the truth ever come out?

For me, it was just a simple conflict between kids. Sure, they got into a scuffle. But it's part of life, and what's good about it is that they were able to resolve it afterwards. (with Teacher's help, of course)

But wait, this is the teacher in me that's reacting. My husband thinks I under-reacted. He said I could have at least demanded to talk to the other boy's parents. Now I feel awful. How's a parent to react?

When I first saw Blue, my first reaction was "My Baby!" I mean, the scratch could have been serious if it were a few millimeters nearer the eye. A bruise ran under the whole length of his eye, almost reaching his nose. He cringes when it's touched.

But Blue carried himself well, and he assured me that he was ok. Ah, my baby's a little man now. Thanks, Baby, for making me feel that I've done what has to be done.
